Chapter 10

Massacre on Marine Drive

I somehow managed to reach our new office on time— deprived of sleep, carrying bloodshot eyes, and a migraine headache that rippled through my head. But the sight of the place was something to behold. Situated on the twenty first floor of a high rise in Lower Parel, the office of ‘Titanic’ was a place where work met leisure. Bright ivory colored interiors complemented by hazel oak panels gave the place a posh feel. A mix of vanilla and lemon scents accentuated the beauty of the premises while the view of the Arabian Sea from the enormous glass windows provided an insight into heaven. All the Key Managerial Personnel were rewarded with luxurious offices, while the corner space was reserved for an open meeting room, design of which was inspired by the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. I kid you not, not a single chair touched the floor. We also had an open cafe, pool table, foosball, a mini library, and a secret bar for when we would celebrate. We had already submitted our paperwork to finally be incorporated and 221, Tower B, Brackstreet Highs was our new home, from where we’d operate our online marketplace and art businesses. We had already hired men for the first one as our drug business soared and we had to scale up Titanica, our online marketplace which we were using as a front.

I had barely walked down to my own office and settled on the abnormally comfortable leather chair, when a knock at the door caught me off guard. My friends couldn’t have possibly been down there that early after the night we had pulled off and it was still an hour when the employees would arrive. So you can imagine my surprise when I saw a tall man with curly grey hair walking in my den while flaunting his ironed khaki dress.

Yes. The freaking Police Commissioner of Mumbai.

“I am in awe of this place. Truly magnificent. If it was any more perfect, I’d have jumped off the roof to be here because this is heaven”, he chuckled to his dry humour. “Look at the sea. It has a special place in the heart of Mumbaikars, right? My wife takes me out to jog at Marine Drive every morning. I hate it. But when I see the sea from there, it’s a view that cannot be expressed in words. That is the view I want to see on the day when I die.”

“To what do I owe this visit from you?” I asked, a little tensed.

“Ah! It would break my heart to watch you abandon this office and rot in a jail instead.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean this.” He pulled out a folded paper and smacked it on my table. “That’s called an arrest warrant. A little gift for you.”

I picked it up and read it with horror visible in my eyes. “For drug smuggling? Are you serious?”

“More questions in the jail. I’d appreciate if you walk yourself out without creating any drama.
